Week One Discussion: Where I'm From Poems
I am from villages west and cities east
Languages, accents and dialects mixed
Over there but not quite here, resident not citizen
Pulled by work’s promise and beginning to the new world
Restless in design and tired from advice
I am from a digital immigrant’s love of hard work
Of early mornings but never late nights
I am of bustling newsrooms, quietly telling the world
Election! Eruption! Escalation!
Of truth when truth has become a choice
I am from gray ladies and peacocks, struggling to survive
Of moments where we feel the hand of history upon us
And the privilege to publish under threat
Now I am from villages lost and cities forgotten
From languages ancient, punic and peloponnesian mixed
Back then but not quite here, still immigrant not resident
Sword and sandal alongside senate and scholar
Pulled by school’s promise and beginnings to the ancient world
Reborn in work by a love of learning
And deeply curious to understand what’s next
