Module 3.1: Be a Radio Commentator of an Ancient Religious Procession
Matthaios:
"Greetings, citizens of Athens! I am Matthaios, your commentator, coming to you live from the bustling streets of our city on this extraordinary day—the sixth of our grand Panathenaea festival. Today, all of Athens gathers in tribute to our beloved patron and beat the drums for our goddess Athena, as we take part in a sacred procession that winds its way to the heights of the Acropolis. This is not merely a celebration; it is a living testament to our devotion and unity under the goddess’s watchful gaze.
[Background sounds of lively crowd and soft drumbeats]
Matthaios:
"Setting out from the city's Northwest gate, at the so called Dipylon Gate, the streets are lined with eager Athenians, some from the city, others from distant lands who have come to pay homage. This procession begins with the sacred Peplos—the woven robe, crafted by the skilled hands of our women, portraying scenes of Athena’s valor in battle. Carried high, it leads the way, draped over a ship cart that rolls through the crowd. Women wearing head scarves standing off to one side and the sight is splendid, and the people cheer, awestruck by the vibrant colors and intricate detail that honor the wisdom and might of our goddess as flutes ring out across the crowd.
[Sound effect of the crowd cheering, flute music playing softly]
Matthaios:
"Behind the Peplos are our noble youth, the epheboi, striding confidently, each a symbol of our city’s strength and future. These young men, with vigor in their steps and pride in their eyes, carry weapons and adornments. As the procession progresses to the agora, crossing it diagonally and then continuing onto the North Slope of the Acropolis Hill, they embody the courage and discipline that Athena herself imparts to us. As they march, flutes and drums accompany their steps, creating a powerful rhythm that reverberates through the heart of Athens, a rhythm that mirrors our city’s resilience and dedication.
[Background sounds of drums growing louder]
Matthaios:
"As riders pay their respects to the city and move off at a gallop, now we see the esteemed priests and priestesses in their ceremonial robes, bearing the sacred vessels and barley for the offerings. Their expressions are solemn, for they know well the gravity of the moments to come. With careful steps, they make their way to the Acropolis, their faces calm yet purposeful, knowing they carry the heart of the city’s prayers.
[Pause as the crowd sounds soften, replaced by the bleating of sheep and lowing of cattle]
Matthaios:
"At last, we arrive at the summit of the Acropolis, before the grand altar of Athena. Here, arranged with utmost care, are more than a hundred cattle and sheep—each one flawless, each one chosen as a worthy offering to our goddess. The crowds of people watch in silent reverence, aware that this hecatomb, this public sacrifice, is the pinnacle of our dedication to Athena, a sacrifice of immense significance.
[Sounds of the cattle and sheep mingling with the rhythmic music]
Matthaios:
"As the priest raises his hands, the crowd hushes. Barley is scattered over the altar, purifying it, marking the beginning of the hecatomb. Then, in measured steps, the animals are led forward. A murmur rises from the crowd as the first sacrifice is made, its blood running down the sacred altar, soaking into the very stones of the Acropolis. It is a powerful, humbling sight—a reminder of our place within the divine order.
[Background sounds of fire crackling, smoke rising]
Matthaios:
"The altar flames flicker, smoke rises, and a silence descends, broken only by the quiet murmurs of those in prayer. As more sacrifices are made, the smoke thickens, rising to meet the sky, carrying our devotion to the heavens. These flames symbolize the strength and wisdom Athena grants us, and today, and as our earthly flutes play, they bridge our world with hers.
[Cheering from the crowd, faint flute music in background]
Matthaios:
"And now, as the sacrifice concludes, we are reminded of Athena’s blessings. Soon, the sacrificial meat will be shared among us all, uniting our community under the goddess’s favor. Tonight, we shall feast together, a city in celebration and gratitude. Athena’s protection and wisdom shine upon us as brightly as the sun itself.
[Final sounds of crowd cheering, drums fading out]
Matthaios:
"This is Matthaios, signing off from the Panathenaea. As we disperse, may each of us carry forth this spirit of unity, strength, and reverence. May Athena guide and protect us, her loyal people of Athens. Hail to Athena, and farewell until our next gathering!"
